Audio Description Coalition
Training and Professional Development

Audio Description Coalition recognizes initial professional describer training programs of no less than two full days. Audio Description Coalition encourages training programs of three or more days.

The training should be led by an audio description trainer who adheres to the Audio Description Coalition Standards for Audio Description and Code of Professional Conduct for Describers with a minimum of five years of ongoing experience as a describer and/or administrator. Their experience should include collaborating with other professional audio describers and co-leading a training with a more experienced trainer.

The local administrator and the trainer should audition potential trainees to assess their aptitude for audio description. Because the training relies on extensive participation, the ADC recommends a maximum of six participants for effective training with one trainer. The lead trainer should identify a second trainer for a larger group of trainees.

An effective training includes these components:

cognitive warm-up exercises

lecture topics:

the definition and history of audio description

the standards of audio descriptions

pre-show/intermission notes (for live performance trainings)

participatory exercises:

practice and critique description of pertinent examples including live theatre, musicals, dance, opera, film, works of art, artifacts, etc. (as appropriate)

exercises for written pre-show/intermission notes (for live performance trainings)

work with local administrator to establish plans for continued professional development of trainees' through exercises, mentoring, and assessment

Professional trainers require a fee and coverage of their travel and accommodation expenses. Other expenses may include site rental, support staff, audio visual equipment, reproduction of printed materials, hospitality, or other costs particular to the facility.
