Developing Audio Description Skills
a Capacity Building Workshop

presented by the Audio Description Coalition
and the Kennedy Center Leadership Exchange in Arts and Disability (LEAD) Conference

Saturday & Sunday, August 28 & 29, 8:30 am-5:30 pm
Courtyard Marriott San Diego Airport/Liberty Station, San Diego, CA

The Audio Description Coalition will provide a two day training emphasizing the application of the fundamentals of audio description to performances and exhibits. The training is structured to accommodate describers at all levels of expertise--from a beginner who has never tried audio description to an experienced describer who wants to expand his or her existing skills.

In a curriculum developed by an international committee of audio description professionals, the training will introduce, define, and come to an understanding of the key techniques, components or aspects of audio description.

The training includes the opportunity to observe and discuss the audio description of Robin & the 7 Hoods at The Old Globe and an audio description tour of the San Diego Zoo, as well as exercises built around the core skills of audio description and the application of audio description to different media (theatre, music, dance, opera, exhibits, museums, TV, film video, and web).

Sign up early and the session leaders will contact you to help tailor the training to address your specific concerns.

The training fee covers two full days of training; the audio described performance of Robin & the 7 Hoods; training materials; an audio described tour of the San Diego Zoo; and continental breakfast, deli lunch, snacks and beverages on both days. Registrants will receive a certificate of participation upon completion of the two-day training.

Trainers:
Roz Chalmers, Artistic Consultant, VocalEyes (UK)
Celia Hughes, Executive Director, VSA arts of Texas (TX)

About the Audio Description Coalition

Audio Description Coalition members are trained audio describers, administrators, and users dedicated to the highest quality of audio description through training, mentoring, evaluation and professional development and are committed to upholding the Audio Description Coalition Standards for Audio Description and Code of Professional Conduct for Describers.

The Audio Description Coalition Standards and Code of Professional Conduct represents the combined training, experience, knowledge, and resources of this group of audio describers and trainers from across the United States.

The founders of the Audio Description Coalition first met at the Leadership Exchange in Arts and Disability (LEAD) Conference in Washington, DC, in August 2006, to begin to document what they believe to be the best practices or standards of audio description and to create a code of conduct for audio describers and trainers. Working from the Standards for Audio Description of the California Audio Describers Alliance, the founders of the Audio Description Coalition developed this expanded document between August 2006 and August 2007. The second edition was issued in August 2008, and the third edition was issued in June 2009.
